Benefits and Potential Side Effects of CBD

Sebastian Morales CBD Research

In the last few years, CBD oil has been becoming more and more popular, and people of all ages use it for several purposes. This “new” popularity is more like a resurgence since CBD has been used for thousands of years. It was only about 100 years ago that its use and popularity decreased because of the taboo around the cannabis plant. Yet, the benefits of CBD have been known by humankind for centuries and we’re only rediscovering them now.

Because CBD was dormant for many years, the scientific research for many of its medical uses is still limited. Though, for some specific treatments (like epilepsy, for example), there is more conclusive research than for others.  On the other hand, there have also been reports of some side effects in some cases.

We’ve created this article to provide you with an objective overview of the benefits and potential side effects of CBD.

CBD Benefits

It Helps with some Neurological Disorders

As we mentioned above, the research on CBD is still limited, which is why it is still unclear how exactly it interacts with the brain. It may be unclear how the interaction happens but what is clear is that CBD has a real interaction with the brain or neurological system. Below is a list of some neurological disorders for which CBD has shown to be beneficial:

Epilepsy

The most abundant research on the benefits of CBD is on its treatment for epilepsy. It has been found, in numerous studies, that CBD helps reduce epileptic seizures.

Alzheimer

Studies show that CBD use helps to prevent inflammation and neurodegeneration.

Parkinson

CBD helps Parkinson’s patients to have a better quality of life, including better sleep.

Multiple Sclerosis

According to the available research, CBD helps patients with multiple sclerosis prevent inflammation and also reduce spasms.

CBD impact on brain

It Helps Relieve Pain

Even though there is no conclusive research, one of the reasons why CBD is so effective on humans is because of its interaction with the endocannabinoid system. Studies have shown that CBD is highly effective to treat chronic pain and inflammation from arthritis, for example. It can be taken as an oil or applied directly to the skin as a CBD salve.

It Serves as an Aid for Symptoms Related to Cancer

First of all, one thing must be clear: CBD is not, in any way, a cure for cancer. Or, at least, research hasn’t suggested that. However, CBD helps to alleviate some symptoms related to cancer and its treatment’s side effects. For instance, CBD is of great help for people who have to go through chemotherapy: it helps them reduce nausea, fatigue, and pain associated with it.

It Helps with Anxiety and Depression

A report from the World Health Organization suggests that, when it comes to anxiety, CBD has led to “reduction of muscular tension, restlessness, fatigue, problems in concentration, improvement of social interactions in rodent models of anxiety and stress; reduced social anxiety in patients”. Many CBD users have also reported that taking CBD oils has helped them to treat their depression.

Other Benefits of CBD

In addition to what we’ve already mentioned, CBD also helps with:

  • Psychosis
  • Addiction
  • Chron’s disease
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Diabetes complications

Side Effects

CBD is, undoubtedly, a great alternative to traditional medicine, according to the research there is available. However, there are some side effects that some users have reported such as:

  • Fatigue
  • Interaction with prescription medications
  • Possible pregnancy effects
  • Dry mouth

People have been taking advantage of CBD benefits for centuries and, today, CBD is having a revival, after losing popularity (and legality) for many years. The available research has shown positive results on the effects CBD has on people’s health. However, more research needs to be made to be able to have more conclusive results. One thing is for sure: CBD’s full potential is still unexplored, and it may be much more beneficial than we already know it is.
