What's the Difference Between CBD Oils and Tinctures

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been gaining popularity due to its many potential benefits. It is the preferred compound to extract from hemp plants due to its non-psychoactive nature.  Over the last two years, CBD products have  been released in a variety of forms. The most notable, are CBD Oils and CBD Tinctures. Many companies use the two terms interchangeably. This has led to a great deal of confusion resulting from misinformation. There is most definitely a a difference between CBD Oils and Tinctures.

What's CBD Oil?

This is an oil that has CBD extracted from cannabis or industrial hemp. In the case of Vitality CBD products, it's extracted from industrial hemp.

After extraction, the resulting raw full-spectrum cannabinoids are extremely potent. To help regulate potency, and to aid in digestions, those cannabinoids are diluted using an MCT carrier oil. In the case of Vitality CBD, that oil comes from Organic Coconuts. Other via carrier oils include; olive oil and hemp seed oil.

Primarily CBD Oils are used through sublingual methods of consumption. Though you can apply CBD oil directly to your hair, skin, or nails topically. That is one of the reasons we choose coconut oil, as it's a touted ingredient in many food, dietary, and beauty products.

Difference Between CBD Oils and Tinctures

Some of the CBD oils are quite strong, our strongest is 1400 MG, such that half a dropper per day is a sufficient dose. However, the dosage will largely depend on your medical history and reasons for use.

CBD oils can be used in cooking because they are fat-soluble and you can effortlessly add them to many recipes, which utilize butter or oil. For example, CBD oils are mostly used when making brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

Traditionally, CBD Oils will contain nothing other than oil (CBD rich hemp oil and an MCT Oil).

What is a CBD Tincture?

A tincture is made by soaking organic cannabinoid matter into a water and alcohol solution. CBD tinctures are extracted from cannabis plants or industrial hemp using alcohol diluted in water. Additional ingredients such as flavoring agents and herbs are added to tinctures to improve their taste.

The alcohol used during extraction serves as a preservative to the CBD and increases is thought to increase bodily absorption rates. Tinctures are also administered via sublingual methods for fast absorption into the body.

Difference Between CBD Oils and Tinctures

CBD tinctures can be ingredients in edibles and beverages. Most opt to obtain their daily CBD dose by dropping recommended amounts of the tincture to their favorite drinks or food. However, if you would want to cook with the tinctures, it is wise to look for water-soluble CBD as it will mix better with the rest of the ingredients.

So What are the Differences Between Them?

CBD oil and a CBD tincture mainly differ in composition. Apart from using an alcohol-based solution during extraction, tinctures contain other ingredients for improved taste in addition to the CBD. Oils, on the other hand, are diluted with other oils instead of water, alcohol, or natural (or unnatural) flavorings.

Generally, CBD tinctures have lower CBD concentration than their Oil counterparts. This is due to the extra ingredients and flavors added to the tinctures to make their taste more appealing or provide additional benefits. Some of the ingredients added to tinctures include sweeteners, emulsifiers, relaxation herbs like chamomile, vitamins, and essential oils.

For example, our water-soluble cbd oil, is technically, a tincture. It contains water, organic rosemary extract, and polysorbate 80. These are additional ingredients make it so the product is not pure oil. Therefore, it is a tincture. However, it's important to note these ingredients are to make the CBD Oil within the tincture water-soluble, and not to add flavor or otherwise modify the product.

However we see we add to confusion by calling that particular product both an oil and a tincture. Most others tinctures involve soaking their raw cannabinoids in alcohol-based solutions. Ours does not. Which gave us a headache trying to accurately name it if we're being completely honest (which we always are).

So Which Should I Buy?

Some people may prefer to use oils instead of tinctures because the oils are more flexible. They can be blended in smoothies, added to salad dressings or used when baking. CBD oil does not have an alcohol base, which can be undesired by individuals looking for wellness properties, and those who avoid anything with alcohol in it.

Other people may prefer tinctures instead of oils because of their added ingredients and flavors that make them taste better. Though again, that is an opinion. Many people like the natural taste of hemp.

Making products that come in different flavors, like peach, chocolate, or vanilla turns a dietary supplement into something like a candied beverage. Which we were never interested in making or selling. CBD is a dietary supplement, and should probably be treated like one.

It is, however, a matter of taste preference when choosing between the oil and tinctures. Or it's a matter of how you intend to use the product. Will you be ingesting it directly? Or will you be looking to mix CBD into a beverage?

In Summary

The difference between CBD oils and tinctures isn't that hard to wrap ones head around when clearly spelled out.

Tinctures should never be used topically. Consumers are more likely to experience skin irritation when using CBD tinctures because of their additional ingredients. For this reason, some users prefer organic CBD oil for topical use. Though many just turn to CBD salves as they are intended for only topical use.

All that said, both CBD oils and tinctures are an excellent way to get your daily dose of CBD.

CBD oils and tinctures are among the most readily available CBD products available on the market right now. They are both effective and easily ingested, regardless of the inherent differences, we note throughout this article.

Whether you prefer oils or tinctures, be sure to choose high quality, full-spectrum CBD oil derived from USDA Certified Organic Hemp. The CBD from other hemp sources can be of lower quality, and worse, from potentially illegal plant sources.
