the difference between CBG and CBD

CBG vs CBD: What’s the Difference?

Vitality CBDGeneral News

At Vitality, we don’t just want our customers to fall in love with our products, we want you to truly understand what benefits you can receive from them.  In our past articles, we’ve discussed the benefits of CBD, but now we want to dive a little further into this topic.  To better understand the products that we’re using, we have to acknowledge their components.  This is why we’re going to take a look at what CBG is, how it’s different from CBD, and what you need to know about purchasing it.

What is CBG?

CBG, which is short for cannabigerol, is one of the most common cannabinoids found in cannabis.  Unlike CBD, CBG is only present for a short amount of time when the cannabis plant is in its early growth, making it more rare and valuable.  It’s similar to CBD because they are both naturally occurring compounds that are present in the cannabis plant.  Although CBG has similar effects as CBD, it interacts with the body differently.  While CBG has the ability to bind with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBD is only able to stimulate them.

There are 3 main differences between CBD and CBG.

  1. Effect on Appetite: A past study on rats showed that the use of CBG actually increased their appetite.  CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t show any change in eating patterns.
  2. Pharmacology: One of the biggest differences between CBD and CBG is that they use different mechanisms to interact with the 5-HT1A serotonin receptor.  The difference is that CBD activates the receptor, while CBG is a natural blocker.
  3. Molecular Structure: The carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms in CBD and CBG are arranged differently.  As a result, they interact differently with the body’s cannabinoid receptors.

Benefits of CBG

Although research for CBG is still limited, researchers are starting to notice many potential benefits of utilizing CBG, such as:

  • Antibacterial properties
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Helps treat symptoms of bladder dysfunction
  • Helps Relieve anxiety and depression
  • Relaxes muscles
  • Promotes Pain Relief

How to Purchase CBG Products

You can use CBG similarly to how you use CBD, which is usually presented as either oil or salve.  If you look for pure CBG oil, however, you may find that it is rare and expensive.  The reason being is that cannabis plants carry very little CBG, meaning producers require more cannabis plant material to make CBG products.

For this reason, some people get discouraged from buying it.  That being said, there’s a solution that many people don’t realize.  In our last article, we learned about full spectrum CBD products, which are products that contain all of the molecules found in the cannabis it was made from.  This means that full spectrum CBD offers all of the benefits of the cannabis plant, including CBG.  Not only does this mean that you’ll receive the benefits of CBG, but it is also believed that cannabinoids work best when they’re all taken together, which is what full spectrum products offer.

At Vitality, all of our CBD oils and CBD salves are full spectrum, meaning you can trust that you’re receiving all of the benefits from the cannabis plant.  If you have any questions about our products or how to use them, feel free to contact us.
