Industrial Hemp and Why We Use It

Why Vitality CBD Uses Industrial Hemp

Most consumers don't understand the difference between words like “cannabis,” “marijuana,” and “hemp”. People have been using these terms interchangeably since the Reefer Madness ads of the 1950's. This has led to confusion about why industrial hemp-derived CBD is different from marijuana. Many still associate “hemp” with the high-inducing effects of marijuana. Thanks to our own (and competitors) articles on the subject, people are learning industrial hemp and marijuana are very different.

Hemp and marijuana are both viable sources of CBD.  However, premiere CBD organizations like Vitality CBD™, source cannabinoid-rich oils from industrial hemp alone. Furthermore, only a select few CBD product companies source industrial hemp crops from American owned and operated farming operations. Even fewer source only USDA certified organic industrial hemp.

At this time, organic hemp grown in the USA is the highest quality source of CBD in the world.

What is Industrial Hemp?

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is a large and durable plant capable of growing  in a variety of conditions and climates. Hemp plants are capable of reaching towering heights of up to 16 feet tall.  Throughout most of recorded history, these plants been used as a food source and in the production of various textiles. Industrial Hemp Makes the Best CBD Products

Even though marijuana and hemp both contain CBD, one was made legal, and the other is not. Marijuana legality varies greatly state by state. Most often, it requires a prescription or is under some other form of heavy regulation. CBD products available in gas stations, smoke shops, vitamin stores, and at online retailers like Vitality CBD™ use only oil extracted from industrial hemp.

That said, we use industrial hemp for many reasons aside from it being legal. If you wanted to read more about the legality of hemp in your state, click here. Below we're quickly summarized four ways industrial hemp benefits our customers and the nation at large.

Concentration of CBD

Cannabidiol is one of over 113 cannabinoids present in industrial hemp plants. The concentration levels of CBD in industrial hemp is much higher than that of traditional marijuana. Manufacturers of CBD products utilizing hemp need less raw materials. They are able to extract far more legal cannabinoids from industrial hemp than from marijuana-based sources. Low to No THC

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the substance that causes intoxication. It's found in high concentrations in marijuana plants and significant lower concentrations in hemp. While most common marijuana strains have anywhere from a 7% to 27% THC level, hemp strains have less than 0.3% THC by volume. That low THC level is what makes industrial hemp legal. With extremely low THC present, legal CBD products generally do not cause intoxication and are therefore non-psychoactive.  This provides relief while still maintaining sobriety.

Sustainable Farming

The hemp plant is naturally a sustainable agricultural product. Farmers can grow hemp as a crop without over straining on the environment. Additionally, hemp crops require less water than the majority other plants utilized in the making of textiles and fabrics. Just another way hemp farming  naturally conserves resources over other alternative crops.

Environmentally Friendly

While we already mentioned the sustainability of hemp as a crop in prior sections, it's important to note that no part of the hemp plant goes to waste. Every single part of the hemp plant has a viable use in modern society. Whether we use its seeds for food or oil sources, it's cannabinoids for dietary supplements, or it's stalks for fabrics and textiles.

USDA Certified Organic by Eco-Cert

The USDA designed their Organic Certification to ensure consistent growing and manufacturing practices throughout all industries, not just the CBD product industry. The US Dept. of Agriculture utilizes third-party organizations like Eco-Cert to evaluate farms and extraction and bottling facilities to ensure no inorganic elements make it into the final product. The USDA Organic seal can only be used by organizations meet strict standards.
